Are you ready for a spooky good time? Thrills and chills await Cub Scouts and their families at this year’s spookoree. It appears a haunted circus is in town. Come if you dare and help gather the clowns back into the clown cars, rescue the high flying acrobatic trainees, and tame the wild circus animals. The event is hosted by Scouts in area troops, crews, ships, and posts. You never know what may happen during the spookoree weekend! 

Join us for a Scout filled weekend of haunted circus fun. Scouts will shoot BB guns and archery, participate in an acrobatics obstacle course, carve and paint pumpkins, and make crafts. The evening will end with carnival games and a haunted hayride. Prizes will be awarded for best Cub Scout and Scouter costumes, best decorated Cub Scout tent, and the best-decorated troop, ship, crew or post campsite. Come if you dare!

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) training will be taught during spookoree.  

Registration 

Registration is $16.50 for the first Scout and $15 for each additional Scout. Adults are $5.00 each.

Late registration begins October 16, 2019. There is no onsite registration.

What to Bring

Personal gear:      

  • BSA Health and Medical forms (Parts A & B) for every participant
  • Tents with ground cloth
  • Bedroll, or sleeping bag and pillow
  • Field uniform (Scout uniform) or activity (Scout t-shirt) uniform
  • Appropriate clothes for weather and extra clothes
  • Jacket, raingear, hat
  • Closed-toed shoes (tennis shoes)
  • Flashlight with fresh batteries
  • Mess kit; water bottle or cup
  • Food (check with your unit leader)
  • Toiletries
  • Medications
  • Folding camp chair
  • Insect repellant
  • Sunscreen
  • Bag of candy for trick-or-treating, one per family
  • Optional items: glow in the dark sticks, camera, hand sanitizer, water, snacks (do not leave in tent), battery operated lantern, wet wipes

BALOO: Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation 

http://san-jacinto.shac.org/DataBALOO is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including packing camping, overnighters and Webelos den overnighters. BALOO training is now comprised of two components* – an online component, and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “Trained” Cub Scout outdoor leader and to receive the BALOO recognition patch. The online component contains introductory and basic information and must be completed prior to the practical component at my.scouting.org. The practical component is an overnight that takes about 16-hours to complete.  
Bring:  BSA Health and Medical Record (Part A & B for all Scouting events), tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad or mattress, sleeping attire, soap, washcloth, towel, hat, bug spray, camp chair, mess kit (knife, fork, spoon, bowl/plate, coffee cup in a mesh bag), camp chair, note-taking materials, appropriate clothes for weather [rain gear, jacket, field uniform (Scout uniform) or activity uniform (Scouting-t-shirt) or comfortable clothes], change of clothes, closed-toed tennis shoes or boots for short hike, and the Cub Scout six essentials (first-aid kit, refillable water bottle, flashlight with extra batteries, trail food, sun protection, whistle). Optional gear: sunglasses, camera, earplugs.
Meals: the registration fee includes lunch. Additional meals will be eaten with your pack.
Registration: Participants will need to register for both the spookoree (with their pack) and BALOO (individually).

Notice!  Please be advised that promotional videotaping/photography may be in progress at any time at an event. Your entrance constitutes your agreement that the council and district has the right to reproduce your likeness in videography/photography for promotion (e.g., publications, internet, newspaper).

Scouting Safely

Safety is Your Responsibility posterThe BSA's Commitment to Safety is ongoing and we want you to know that the safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees cannot be compromised. The Boy Scouts of America puts the utmost importance on the safe and healthy environments for its youth membership. The Sam Houston Area Council takes great strides to ensure the safety of its youth as well as the adult volunteer leadership that interacts with them. 

BSA Guide to Safe Scouting policies must be followed. All participants must follow Youth Protection Guidelines at all Scouting events. Highlights include:

  • Two-deep leadership on all outings required.  
  • One-on-one contact between adults and youth members is prohibited. 
  • The buddy system should be used at all times. 
  • Discipline must be constructive.

Health and safety must be integrated into everything we do, to the point that no injuries are acceptable beyond those that are readily treatable by Scout-rendered first aid. As an aid in the continuing effort to protect participants in a Scout activity, the BSA National Health and Safety Committee and the Council Services Division of the BSA National Council have developed the "Sweet Sixteen" of BSA safety procedures for physical activity. These 16 points, which embody good judgment and common sense, are applicable to all activities.
